Determining cause of Cache Bay house fire will be difficult

An insurance adjuster is going over what remains of a one-and-a-half story home in Cache Bay that was destroyed by fire.

The fire broke out just before 2:30am Thursday and West Nipissing Fire Chief Richard Maranda says a working smoke alarm alerted the residents to the blaze and everyone got out safely.

The fire took the better part of Thursday morning to put out.

By early Thursday afternoon Maranda said firefighters were looking for hot spots.

The fire saw a response from the main fire station in Sturgeon Falls and the department in Cache Bay.

In all, 12 firefighters fought the blaze and the extreme cold.

Maranda says the local department will investigate what caused the fire, but determining that cause will be difficult.

The roof and entire second floor of the house collapsed to the ground and that’s going to increase the difficulty level of getting to the root cause.

Maranda also says for now it’s not known where the fire started.

The fire was a very stubborn one because it took place in a very old home that had wood chips and sawdust behind the walls.

Maranda says once the fire was underway, it quickly got in behind the walls and made its way to the attic.

Asked if Victims Services would be helping the family, Maranda said the members were asked about this and said it wasn’t necessary.
