Two big name curlers coming to North Bay

Two very big names in curling are making an appearance in North Bay.

Brad Jacobs and Brent Laing are in the community for the very first Peter Minogue Rocks and Hearts curling tournament.

Jacobs, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, won the Canadian championship in 2013 and the Olympic gold medal in curling the following year.

Laing has won the Canadian championship three times; 2007, 2012 and 2016.

He also won the world championships during those same years.

The North Bay tournament is being held to raise money for three local non-profit groups.

They are the Canadore College Foundation, the Military Resource Centre and the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation.

The three groups are raising money for student scholarships, military family support and expanded hospital services which include new programs as well as bringing leading-edge medical technology and treatment to the hospital.

The curling tournament is named after Minogue who was a community leader and athlete and was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Minogue was also an avid curler.

He skipped several winning teams and on more than one occasion he almost made it to the Brier.

The three-day tournament begins January 18th and Jacobs and Laing will play Saturday morning on the 19th.

Both champions take to the ice at 11:00am and the public is invited to the free event.
