Weather closes northern highways for several hours

Tuesday’s weather shutdown major highway routes but most roadways have since re-opened with one exception.  The biggest impact was the closure of Highway 400 in the Parry Sound District because of almost zero visibility.  Police re-routed traffic into Parry Sound for about four hours until the highway was safe to drive on again.    Police wouldn’t let motorists use secondary highways in the Parry Sound District because the wind, nil visibility and snow created a dangerous situation.  It was the same story for Highway 542 on Manitoulin Island.  Police closed the corridor from Mindemoya to Providence Bay because of zero visibility and drifting snow. The highway re-opened late in the afternoon.  The one stretch of highway that remains closed is Highway 17 between Wawa and Highway 556.  The highway has been closed since 3:00 a.m. Tuesday because of poor visibility.  There is no detour as transports wait out the weather.
