OPP to replace West Nipissing Police as court challenge fails

West Nipissing can move ahead and replace its municipal police with the OPP.

The development is the result of a failed attempt by the West Nipissing Police Services Board to launch a court challenge of the switch.

The board questioned town council’s process to replace the municipal police and went to the Divisional Court of the Superior Court of Justice to apply for a judicial review.

However, on Wednesday the court dismissed the police board’s request.

With the application history, the municipality can now replace the municipal police with the OPP and the date for that is next February.

CAO Jay Barbeau welcomes the court ruling.

Barbeau says although it’s unfortunate that the issue went to court resulting in unnecessary legal costs, he’s pleased that the court ruled in the municipality’s favour.

Barbeau is hopeful that all involved can now work toward a smooth and seamless transition to the OPP for early next year.
