Grand Council Chief calls for more cooperation between all governments

Glen Hare, the Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief, says Ontario has to live by the Treaties that were signed numerous generations ago.

He says Treaties should live forever and are not documents that have an expiry date.

He says they were written with the intent of everyone living in Canada as one family.

Hare made his comments while Ontario held Treaties Recognition Week this week.

He says war veterans have shown us how we should live.

He says in time of war “they gave it their all”.

“All colours of people stood side by side to have peace,” Hare said.

“Well since then there have been so many conflicts.  But we need to get away from that”.

Hare says all governments need to work together and adds it’s alright to disagree.

But he also says at the end of the day, everyone needs to shake hands despite their disagreements.

Hare says Indigenous communities are not anti-development.

He says when they object to something like a mining project, it’s not because they don’t like economic development but rather because there was a failure to consult with First Nations.

The Grand Council Chief stresses there has to be ongoing communication.

He says the adults, regardless of who they are, set the example for others, especially young people, on how business should be carried out.
