Mail delivery resumes today in North Bay and surrounding area

North Bay and surrounding communities might only see a limited amount of mail today.

Although North Bay postal workers are back on the job after a 24 rotating strike on Thursday, the backlog of mail they’ll be dealing with is only the tip of the iceberg.

John Hamilton, a spokesman for Canada Post, says since the union began rotating strikes on Monday, 60 communities have been hit with postal disruptions.

Additionally, not all the walkouts have lasted 24 hours.

Hamilton says in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa, the rotating strikes have gone on for 48 hours.

He adds considering the country’s three major processing centres are in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, the walkouts are definitely creating a backlog.

Hamilton says the stop and start actions are similar to an artery getting clogged meaning customers should expect delays.

Hamilton adds because the employees are no longer working overtime, it makes it even harder to cope with the backlog.

Hamilton says it may take a few extra days to get letters and parcels to customers and that includes goods that are ordered online.

Hamilton adds Canada Post is working with CUPW on getting a deal with the employees.
