Halloween safety tips for the big night

With Halloween here, this evening will be a busy time for the ghosts and goblins throughout West Nipissing as they go about trick or treating.

In an effort to keep the children safe, police agencies are out with tips so everyone can enjoy the evening.

A big tip is children under nine should be with an adult or older child because younger kids haven’t developed all the skills needed to safely cross a street.

When it comes to masks, police say go with face paint because it doesn’t obscure the child’s vision.

Police also say ensure the costumes are bright to make them easier to see.

Stay on the sidewalk while trick or treating or if there are no sidewalks, walk beside the road facing traffic so the driver sees you and you see the car or truck.

Also cross the street at intersections and not between parked cars or half way down a street.

As for motorists, police say drive slowly this evening and watch the distracted driving.
