MPP Vanthof says Ford government has created lots of chaos during first 100 days in office

Temiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says with all the chaos the Ford government has caused during its first 100 days in office, he’s surprised the Tories are celebrating the occasion.

Vanthof says one of the first things the Tories did when they took office was “knock the sex education curriculum back 20 years”.

He says changing the curriculum is serious enough that the Ontario Human Rights Commission has joined a legal challenge of the decision.

The New Democrat says the OHRC believes the government policy is “endangering some students”.

Vanthof says the Tories also meddled in the Toronto municipal election by trying to reduce the size of the city council.

The government’s first attempt to cut the size of council failed and Vanthof says Premier Doug Ford resorted to the notwithstanding clause in the Constitution.

Vanthof says the Toronto city council issue came as a surprise because there was no mention of this during the election campaign.

On the other hand Vanthof says Ford campaigned long and hard that he would dismantle the Wynne Liberal’s Green Energy Act as Premier so when started cancelling these programs, Vanthof says he expected that.

However Vanthof says there was a direct negative consequence of the Tories’ actions to cancel the Green programs.

“They got taken to court by Tesla and lost,” he said.

“They’re not taking the time to look at if what they’re doing is actually legal.”

Vanthof expects more court challenges during Ford’s term and it’s because as a result of the Progressive Conservatives “fulfilling their campaign promises, they’re not looking at the ramifications.”
