Operation Impact underway by the OPP

The OPP have their Operation Impact program in full swing as we head into the Thanksgiving weekend.

Officers will be looking for aggressive drivers including speeders as well as people who drive while impaired, those who are distracted as well as motorists and passengers who are not wearing their seatbelt.

Figures up to October 1st show that these four factors have so far claimed the lives of 156 people in Ontario.

To date, police have issued more than 175,000 tickets involving the Big Four.

The OPP say their goal is not to hand out tickets but rather to keep people in their cars and trucks safe as they drive to and from their destinations.

Of the 156 deaths, 50 people died as a result of speed-related collisions, 37 others died because the driver was inattentive, another 35 died as a result of a drug or alcohol-impaired driver and 34 people lost their lives because they were not wearing a seatbelt.
