MNRF and NFN using nets to evaluate condition of Lake Nipissing

If you’re boating on Lake Nipissing and see nets in the water, leave them alone.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is studying the status of the lake in conjunction with the Nipissing First Nation.

The data will help with future management of the lake and create measures to improve the walleye population.

The nets will be dispersed randomly over the next three weeks.

They’re easily identifiable with orange and white buoys with the initials MNRF.

The ministry is asking boaters not to travel between the buoys and it’s against the law to tamper with the nets.

The nets will be out 20 hours at a time in different parts of the lake.

The ministry is collecting data on the length of the fish, how much they weigh, their sex, age and maturity.
