State of the North conference begins Wednesday in North Bay

North Bay will be buzzing with numerous municipal politicians and Indigenous personnel beginning today as the city is the site for a State of the North conference.

The Northern Policy Institute is the organizer of the event, the second time it’s holding the forum.

The theme this year is how taxation helps communities grow.

The President and CEO of NPI Charles Cirtwill is among the speakers.

Cirtwill kicks off the two-day event with a report on how the 11 districts in Northern Ontario are faring.

Delegates will also hear from Dr. Jack Mintz of the University of Calgary and Mintz will explain what needs to change in Canadian taxes.

Thursday sees a number of First Nation speakers, among them Dwayne Nashkawa, the CEO of the Nipissing First Nation.

The Indigenous speakers will talk about taxation on First Nations.

Peter Politis, the Mayor of Cochrane, has a report on how the north can transform itself following a summit in his community earlier this month.

About 100 delegates are expected from areas like Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Manitoulin and the host city, North Bay.
