Near North school board adopts modified 2015 sex-ed curriculum

Dave Thompson, the chair of the Near North District School Board, says the  board has adopted a resolution to support the 2015 sex education curriculum.

Thompson says the curriculum is one the Ministry of Education has modified slightly and the board has advised teachers to follow it.

Thompson also says the board prefers that the provincial government begin its public consultations with the curriculum and then make the changes afterward.

Thompson says if parents or their children feel uncomfortable about what is being taught, they can ask for permission to be removed from that class.

The board chair says although the board has advised teachers to follow the curriculum, if any of them don’t, it’s not up to the trustees to do any punishing.

He says the consequences would come from the education director.

However the director of education would only look into a case of what is being taught if the board receives a complaint.

Thompson says so far, there have been no complaints about what the educators are teaching their students.
