West Nipissing council strikes new taxi rates

Residents in West Nipissing now know what a cab ride will cost them in the urban part of the municipality and also the rural areas.

Council has struck a new fee structure that takes both amounts into account.

If the ride is in an urban setting like Sturgeon Falls, the passenger pays $3.50 when he or she steps into the cab and it travels the first 100 metres, or one tenth of a kilometre.

Afterward the rate increases 23 cents for every additional tenth of a kilometre.

Council says if the ride is one way in the municipality’s rural section, then the driver and passenger agree to a flat rate beforehand.

Council has built another provision in the flat fee structure that helps the rider.

If the meter reads an amount that is less than the agreed to flat rate, the passenger pays the smaller amount.

However if the meter shows a dollar figure that is greater than the flat rate agreed to earlier, the passenger will pay the agreed upon flat rate.
