Number of forest fires drops

There’s good news on the forest fire front in Northeastern Ontario.

After a few weeks of fighting 11 fires, the number is now down to five.

The reduction is the result of fire rangers being able to extinguish six fires on Wednesday.

The remaining fires are all under control including Parry Sound 33.

The Parry Sound fire remains at 11,362 hectares and a travel restriction close to this fire remains in place.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the fire perimeter will remain restricted for quite a while.

However it does not affect waterways and roadway which were lifted in mid-August.

While crews from other provinces have gone back to their respective homes after helping their Ontario counterparts, they left behind their equipment.

Ontario firefighters continue to use equipment from British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories and Nova Scotia to fight the regional fires.

The fire hazard for the northeast region is low to moderate.
