Autopsy may shed light on how man died after barricading himself from police in Garson

More light might be shed soon on how a man in Garson died while holding off police in the community after a woman was shot.

An autopsy begins today on the 63-year-old’s body after a police tactical squad found him dead in the home.

The Special Investigations Unit, which gets involved when people are injured or die where police are involved, says the man was found with a gunshot wound.

The SIU is not saying at this time if the wound was self-inflicted or not.

The fatal incident began shortly after 6:30pm last Wednesday when Sudbury police were told about a woman being shot in Garson.

The victim is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

As Wednesday evening turned into Thursday morning and police kept trying to get the man to surrender, a tactical unit from the Barrie police arrived.

Efforts to convince the man to surrender went nowhere and after a while when police had not heard from the man, the tactical squad went into the home and found the body of the man.

Police entered the home around 12:30pm Thursday.

With the SIU on the case, Sudbury police will not be releasing any more information.

It’s now up to the SIU to determine if the actions of the police contributed to the man’s death.
