How to avoid bears during camping trips

Camping is a long way from being over and with fall not too far away, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has tips to keep campers from running into bears.

Bears have a keen sense of smell.

Campers can make sure a bear doesn’t get a whiff of what food they have by keeping the food in bear-resistant containers or in sealed plastic bags.

Don’t cook or eat inside your tent and hang the food 13 feet above the ground.

If hiking and young children are with you, keep the kids between the adults.

The MNRF also recommends keeping your dog leashed.

Dogs have a tendency to wander about if not tied up and if it does that and a bear picks up the scent, it might follow Fido back to the camp site.

Other tips include keeping the site clean and burn food scraps and fat droppings.
