Fire bans have been lifted in the North Bay region

The fire bans for North Bay, West Nipissing, Callandar, Nipissing Township and Temagami have been lifted.

That’s the word from Greg Saunders the Deputy Fire Chief of the North Bay Fire Department.

Saunders says the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry lifted its Restricted Fire Zone on Friday for the entire North Bay region.

Saunders says the MNRF removing the designation gives municipalities the discretion to lift their local bans.

With the local bans lifted, Saunders is reminding the public to ensure they have a burning permit before lighting a backyard fire.

Meanwhile the number of wildfires in the northeast is at 29 with one fire out of control.

The remainder are being held or watched including Parry Sound 33, which at just more than 11,000 hectares continues to be held.

That fire threatened to close down Highway 69 a few weeks ago because it was only five kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway and the OPP were concerned that smoke from the fire would create a safety hazard on the roadway.
