Work officially began on the Nipissing Serenity Hospice Friday morning with a ground breaking ceremony at the 799 John Street location in North Bay.
During the event, Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced $1.5 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
NSH chair Mathidle Gravelle Bazinet says with the NOHFC announcement, the group has nearly all of the $7.4 million it needs to build the facility.
The 10-bed hospice will be spread over 2.4 acres of land the city sold to the group overseeing the project for $1.
The facility will have one additional room that families can use for overnight stays.
The hospice is expected to be open in about a year’s time.
