22 wing continues to test for man-made chemical PFAS

CFB North Bay plans to keep testing drinking water on the base as well as water from nearby creeks, rivers and lakes to better understand the impact of the man-made chemical perfluoroalkylated substances, also known as PFAS.

The measure is the result of identifying the chemical in two isolated wells on the base last year in June.

The amount of PFAS was above Health Canada standards and the homeowners it affected were given bottled water until their water was switched to the City of North Bay’s municipal water system.

22 Wing tested well water from 91 homes last year and says all the other wells were well within acceptable levels and have remained that way.

As for the two problem wells, they are no longer being used.

PFAS is a chemical found in several industrial products including the foam that firefighters use to kill flames.

The base used firefighting foam containing PFAS during the early 1970s through to the mid-1990s.

The ongoing tests will tell the base if any remedial work needs to be carried out.

An independent environmental consultant is carrying out the tests and the results will be analyzed by provincially accredited laboratories.
