Rain helps firefighters battling forest fires in the northeast

The rain has been a big help to firefighters taking on dozens of forest fires in the northeast.

Fires in the River Valley region continue to be held while those in the Temagami cluster were all reduced in size.

The River Valley region received 50 mm of rain over the past two days and that’s keeping the fires from growing.

However the Lady Evelyn cluster continues to see many fires including North Bay 72 which covers more than 27,000 hectares.

More than 250 firefighters and 11 helicopters are trying to bring this fire under control.

That includes more than 100 firefighters from Mexico at the scene.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is expecting more help in the coming days including ignition specialists from Parks Canada.

That help will be in the form of more firefighters and equipment.

The MNRF has not updated the number of fires burning in the northeast with its latest news release issued at 11:00pm Tuesday.

However at last count on Monday, there were 55 fires spread across the Northeast.
