McLeod expects a busy term for Nipissing First Nation council

The new Nipissing First Nation council will be sworn in August 7th at its inaugural meeting of the new term.

The swearing-in takes place in the council chambers in Garden Village at 7:00pm

Chief Scott McLeod says council and staff face a busy term.

McLeod says during the first term in office, council was given a lengthy list of priorities from the community after a local consultation.

He says three years wasn’t enough to finish the work on the list and work will continue to whittle it down.

McLeod says the list includes plenty of infrastructure work involving sewer and water as well as roads.

“We’re also exploring seniors’ issues involving assisted living, independent senior housing and long term care,” said McLeod.

“We’re looking at different options and what’s the best fit for our community.”

McLeod says one project that is imminent is ground-breaking work this September for NFN’s new daycare.

McLeod easily won last Friday’s election for Chief according to official figures released by NFN on Wednesday.

The incumbent had 509 votes which was more than double the 236 ballots challenger Bob Commanda picked up.

Jeffrey Stewart was third with 82 votes.
