North Bay man victimized by email scam

A North Bay resident who fell for an email scam has not suffered any financial losses.

The victim responded to an email which appeared to be from Netflix saying it needed banking information re-entered to replace outdated data.

The individual complied not realizing the information was actually being received by fraudsters.

Once the thieves had the information, it was an easy matter to change the account password and security questions.

With that done, the fraudsters next deposited fake cheques in the account which gave the appearance of a larger bank balance and that let them withdraw cash.

The victim got a text message saying his password and security questions had been changed, something which came as a surprise.

When the bank was contacted it noticed the irregularities and froze the account.

North Bay Police say Netflix is one of many companies fraudsters will use to part people from their cash.

They say Netflix and other companies don’t ask you to send banking information, like passwords, in an email.

In the local incident, police have not identified the culprits but say the victim did not lose any money.
