NFN Chief Scott McLeod named temporary Deputy Chief for Lake Huron

Nipissing First Nation Chief Scott McLeod is taking on a new role but it’s only for the short-term.

McLeod has been named Regional Deputy Grand Council Chief for Lake Huron.

The appointment came during general elections where Indigenous leaders elected a new Grand Council Chief.

That person is Glen Hare of Manitoulin Island and the Anisihinabek Nation’s former Deputy Grand Council Chief.

McLeod can’t assume the regional position permanently because he’s also seeking re-election as Chief of the Nipissing First Nation.

Election rules prevent people from serving as both a community chief and deputy chief.

McLeod will serve in the regional role until a permanent deputy is found although the length of time is unknown for now because no date for a vote has been set.

McLeod temporarily joins three other chiefs in the same role who represent different parts of Ontario; namely Northern Superior Region, Southwest Region and the Southeast Region.

As for the new Grand Council Chief, he’s Glen Hare from Manitoulin Island.

Hare replaces Patrick Madahbee who is retiring from the high profile position.
