The fine for illegal dumping in West Nipissing could jump to $500 from the current amount of $205.
The municipality’s Chief Administration Officer Jay Barbeau says the activity is an ongoing concern but adds it’s nothing new.
Barbeau says people tend to drop off their junk in areas where they believe they won’t get caught.
However he cautions sometimes they do, because sometimes in their pile of refuse are clues on their identities.
Barbeau was also surprised that illegal dumping was going on especially considering it has taken place during a time the municipality waived tipping fees at the landfill site.
In addition to a higher fine, councillor Roland Larabie says maybe council should also install surveillance cameras and offer rewards to people who see illegal dumping.
