Man jumps from window, West Nipissing officers cleared by SIU

West Nipissing Police Service officers will not face criminal charges after an 18-year-old man they arrested suffered a serious injury while attempting to elude capture.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges in relation to the serious injury sustained by an 18-year-old man climbed out of a second story window and fell nearly 5 metres to the ground below.

During the early morning hours of April 27, 2017, the man was inside a second-floor apartment when a witness called 911 to report a disturbance coming from that residence.

When officers responded to the call and announced their presence at the apartment door, the man climbed out the second story window and fell to the ground below, hitting his back on the pavement. He then got up, ran and was arrested some distance away.

The man complained of pain in his back and was transported to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a stable compression fracture of the L2 vertebrae.
