What was with all that smoke the other night?

West Nipissing Fire & Emergency Service received several calls about a large amount of smoke that could be seen north of Highway 17, near the municipal landfill, Tuesday night.

Flames and smoke were observed while driving on the road toward the landfill area. On arrival, fire personnel a fully-involved rubbish fire.

Dressed in proper gear including Self-Contained-Breathing-Apparatuses, the firefighters tackled the blaze. Following the help of L.O.B. Landfill equipment to spread the fiery materials, firefighters then applied a large amount of water continuously until approximately 3:00am on Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the investigation continues.

Also from Fire Chief Richard Maranda, the fire department has issued a complete fire ban for West Nipissing, effective immediately. All burning permits are now suspended until further notice. A complete fire ban is also in effect for North Bay due to the fire hazard rating being moderate to high across the region.
