This year’s ice-free date for Lake Nipissing is the fourth-latest in recorded history

The record stands for another year.

When Lake Nipissing still had a considerable amount of ice as the calendar turned to May, there seemed to be a chance that at least some of the ice would remain until the Victoria Day weekend.

According to Helicopters Canada, Lake Nipissing has been ice-free since Monday, May 14th. The record for the latest ice-off is May 19th, in 1926. This year is tied for the fourth-latest ice-off in recorded history. Only in 1923, ’26 and ’72 did the ice melt later.

The average range, containing 68 per cent of all recorded ice-off dates lies between April 19th and May 7th.
