Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says high hydro rates are a big reason why people are stressed out.
And the New Democrat, who is seeking re-election, says it’s going to get worse under the Liberal Fair Hydro Plan.
Vanthof says the Liberals borrowed $25-billion to subsidize electricity.
He says that borrowed money has to be paid back meaning it’s going to get tacked on to your hydro bill in the future.
Vanthof says another way the Liberals have bungled hydro is by having different delivery charges for residents.
“Depending where you live, you pay a different delivery charge,” said Vanthof.
“If you live in rural and Northern Ontario, in many cases you pay more for delivery than you pay for the actual hydro.”
Vanthof says an NDP government would resolve this issue by equalizing delivery charges.
Vanthof says another way to bring down rates is to buy back Hydro as the NDP have proposed after the Liberals sold off parts of it.
The New Democrat also says as the expensive long-term hydro contracts the Liberals created expire, the NDP will let them expire instead of signing new ones.
