Green Party candidate for Timiskaming-Cochrane says mining royalties would help Northern Ontario

Casey Lalonde represents the Green Party in Timiskaming-Cochrane and says Northern Ontario is one of the most economically depressed areas across Canada.

Lalonde says we’re gradually losing our population especially among young people and there’s no real growth strategy.

Lalonde says the Green party has a proposal to start turning this around and it involves resource royalties from extractions.

“We’re not going to effectively grow our communities and address some of the financial issues if we’re not going to get income,” Lalonde said.

“We should be getting (income) from resource extraction like mining.”

Lalonde cites Sudbury as an example where its roads are pounded and damaged by large trucks hauling ore.

She says these companies mine the resources, use public infrastructure which they damage but the repairs are subsidized by the taxpayers.

Lalonde says another major issue in the riding is the poor state of healthcare.

Casey Lalonde says this is especially true for seniors and there aren’t enough resources to care for them.

Lalonde says this is no way to treat seniors and one thing that’s needed is better home care.

Lalonde says mental health is another major issue but it doesn’t get enough attention.

She says the Green Party would provide coverage for things like specialty therapists or social workers the same way we see a doctor.

At the time of this publication, the Trillium candidate did not get back to us for an interview and the Liberals had not yet announced their candidate.
