Board begins counting number of homeless people in Nipissing

Counting the number of homeless people in Nipissing District continues.

The Nipissing District Social Services Administration Board is once again trying to determine the number of people with no place to live in an effort to ultimately defeat homelessness in the district.

Volunteers are visiting shelters where some with no place to live spend the night as well as other locations including known street areas.

The agency last counted the number of homeless in 2016.

At that time it found just more than 100 people have no shelter.

However, it cautions that the number is a bare minimum because it can’t track and find all homeless people.

A few weeks ago the Indigenous Friendship Centre said the number of homeless people in the region easily tops 300 and continues to rise.

Two of the centre’s employees are dedicated to find shelter for the homeless.

The DSSAB count ends this Thursday.
