NFN Chief Scott McLeod expecting big turnout for Chiefs of Ontario conference

The Chiefs of Ontario Conference being hosted this June by the Nipissing First Nation could see a very high turnout.

Chief Scott McLeod says it’s because this is an election year for the Ontario Regional Chief.

“All 132 Chiefs from Ontario are eligible to attend,” McLeod said.

He adds that also includes band members and support staff.

McLeod says it’s his understanding that Isadore Day is seeking re-election as Regional Chief for another three year term.

Although not official, McLeod added it’s expected that Chief Eva Hill from the Six Nations Reserve will challenge Day for the top regional post.

Moose News asked McLeod if he would also let his name stand and he said no.

“There’s still a lot of work at Nipissing that I’d like to see to the end,” McLeod said.

The Chief added that for that reason he plans on seeking re-election when Nipissing holds band elections in July.

As for Nipissing holding the Chiefs conference, McLeod says he believes it’s the first time the First Nation has held the annual event, at least in recent memory.

Because of the election for Regional Chief, Nipissing is expecting anywhere from 200 to 300 people to attend.

The economic impact alone for off-reserve accommodations and food for Sturgeon Falls and North Bay could approach $250,000.

This doesn’t include any activities planned to take place on NFN or other activities the delegates participate in away from the reserve beyond hotel and restaurants.

The conference takes place from June 26th to the 29th.
