Chamber of Commerce responds to Labour Market Group jobs report

The President of the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce says people need to be careful how they interpret the February job postings from the Labour Market Group.

Peter Chirico says while it`s good news that the vacancies were up in February because it means there were plenty of jobs available, it doesn’t mean employers are about to go on a hiring spree in spite of the new minimum wage.

Chirico says many of the February job vacancies are in areas that already pay above minimum wage so it`s not a factor in this case.

Chirico says from business owners he’s talked to, high school and post-secondary students are still going to have a tough time finding work this summer because of the new $14 an hour minimum wage.

He says that new rate remains a concern for employers.

Chirico also says the February job openings represent a challenge although that might not evident at a first glance.

“While it’s good news that we have vacancies and jobs are available, how do we address that to make sure that they’re filled,” he said.

“This is what we really have to look at so the vacancies are filled for the long term.”

Employers posted nearly 400 job vacancies in February one of the highest Februaries in years when plenty of jobs were available.
