First Nickel fined $1.3 million after miners die

It’s a 1.3 million fine for First Nickel after two miners died at the Lockerby Mine in 2014.   Both men were trapped by 12 tonnes of falling material which eventually choked them.  The company was convicted for six offenses under the Occupational Health and Safety Act including not keeping a mine free of lowing water that could endanger a miner.  Another charge involved failing to check the workplace for dangers and hazards.   The penalty is the largest fine ever in Ontario mining history.
