West Nipissing Police Inspector Ray St. Pierre says someone is watching Kijiji to scam people out of money. Police became aware of the scam from a resident selling a four wheeler only to get a cheque from someone who overpaid for the vehicle. St. Pierre says the fake buyer asked the seller to return the surplus amount to him. St. Pierre says fortunately the seller didn’t fall for the ploy. Under the scam the cheque the victim receives and deposits in their account is a fake. However by the time the bank discovers this, the victim has usually sent the surplus back to the sender and then is out that amount of cash. The advice from St. Pierre is simple. If you get a cheque from someone you don’t know asking for the surplus to be returned, don’t do that.
