Officer cleared by SIU after man falls from eighth floor of building

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a North Bay Police Service officer in relation to the death of a 38-year-old man who fell from an 8th-floor window.

In question were the circumstances surrounding the death of a 38-year-old Ottawa-area man at a Lakeshore Drive apartment building in North Bay.

At approximately 1:30pm on Sunday, December 4, 2016, Emergency Medical Services called North Bay Police for assistance at an apartment building located at 365 Lakeshore Drive in North Bay.

Police located the 38-year-old man near the building and the investigation revealed that he had been asked to vacate the apartment of an acquaintance. The man was a known drug user. The officers wrote in their reports that although the man was fidgety, he was lucid and able to make his own decisions. The man repeatedly dismissed the officers’ offers to help, as well as to be treated by EMS.

At approximately 2:30pm, the man fell from the building to the ground nearly 20 metres below. He was pronounced dead and suicide was later ruled as the cause of death.
