Former West Nipissing councillor started petition for referendum

Former West Nipissing councillor Lise Senecal is the person who started the local petition that asks council to hold a referendum on whether to replace the municipal police with the OPP without debating the impact.   Senecal says council voted to accept the OPP model without even discussing the impact millions of dollars in new debt will have.

She compares their approach to someone buying an expensive home without proper planning.  She says she wouldn’t buy a $1 million dollar house first and worry about how to pay for it later.  She says that makes no sense at all but argues that’s what council has done.    Senecal believes councillors risk their political seats if a lot of people sign the petition and council rejects their request for a referendum.

The goal is to give council a petition with at least 4,000 names.  The petition can be signed until at least the end of December at various businesses in West Nipissing.    Senecal will present it to council at the January 9th meeting.
