FedNor announces $1 million to detect toxic blue green algae in northern lakes

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine now has the tools to accurately identify blue green algae when it shows up in northern lakes including those in the North Bay region.  Toxic algae is a known to affect people`s health but that risk may be lowered thanks to FedNor.  The federal agency will provide $1 million to help the medical school develop technology to identify the algae.  The school will develop specialized technology in a partnership with Discover Air Fire Services.   Special sensors will be mounted on Air Fire Services planes and record algae contaminated waterways with fly-overs.
