Details of OPP costing study

It will take years before West Nipissing sees a savings by switching to the OPP.  A staff analysis shows the OPP will initially cost the municipality more money than what it now pays for the local police.  The breakeven point isn’t reached until 2025 and after that West Nipissing starts saving money.  Staff also says there’s a $2.5 million exit cost.  That includes a $1.8 million adjustment to the top up the pension and the remainder is spent on severance for the uniformed and civilian employees that don’t transfer to the OPP.  Another cost is the municipality has to foot the bill for an $8 million building with payments spread over 30 years.
