Sault Ste. Marie MPP Ross Romano says there’s a big hurdle the city has to overcome if it wants to secure a Ring of Fire smelter. That hurdle is the restructuring the former Algoma Steel is going through. Algoma owns the property that would house a smelter by Noront Resources and the restructuring creates uncertainty. However Romano believes if an agreement can be formed to make the property available to Noront, then the hurdle disappears. The Sault is one of four centres hoping to host the smelter with the others being Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Timmins.
