Police board chair and West Nipissing councillor at odds after questions about chief’s contract

The West Nipissing Police Services Board is disappointed with council comments over the police chief’s contract.   Chair Barry Bertrand says council created the perception that the board may have done something not in the best interest of the community when negotiating the Chief’s contract.  Bertrand says this is not the case and that the integrity of the board, including the two councillors who represent council, is beyond reproach.  Bertrand says the negotiations did not affect any costing process as council seemed to imply earlier this month.   However at least one councillor doesn’t agree with Bertrand and is fighting back.  Guilles Tessier says like it or not, council has the right and responsibility to ask questions on issues involving tax dollars especially when those matters are decided behind closed doors.    He says council does this regularly with other boards and the police board is no exception. Tessier admits the police board is autonomous when making decisions, but that doesn’t mean it’s free of public scrutiny.   He also says Bertrand is being condescending and insulting to council when he explains the role of the police board adding no lesson is needed.
