Rail collision findings

Transport Canada says several mistakes led to a collision between a CP Rail train near Chapleau last year and a hi-rail track vehicle.  A hi-rail vehicle is a converted truck that can ride the tracks.  The investigation shows that two employees in the truck came on the main track and drove west intending to get off at the next crossing.  The problem was the truck wasn`t detected by rail traffic control and the foreman was fatigued when he let the truck onto the track.  As a result, when the CP train approached the truck from the opposite direction the engineer hit the train`s emergency brakes.  The workers in the truck were able to slow down and jump out before the engine smashed into the truck destroying it.  No one was hurt in the incident which took place last year in March.
