From the moment the sale of Ontera to Bell Aliant was announced in April, the Steelworkers union has been readying for layoffs. And now they’re coming. Union spokesman Ron Marleau says 40 unionized positions at the telecommunications firm will be eliminated. Marleau says the job losses represent nearly half of the unionized workforce. The cuts will come over two years once the sale to Bell is complete next month. A business plan put together by the employees and management at Ontera was rejected by the province during the winter.
