Nipissing-Temiskaming MP Anthony Rota talks Canada Summer Jobs funding

Nipissing-Temiskaming MP Anthony Rota says the new Canada Summer Jobs announcement for Indigenous youth is a big boost for the area. Last week in Thunder Bay the federal government announced that it will be spending $870,000 to create summer jobs for Indigenous students in Northern Ontario.

Rota says it will bring four more projects to the Nipissing area, and create up to 20 new positions. Rota also added the Nipissing First Nation is one organization among three in the region participating in the program.

Rota says some funding from the original announcement made last year came back because it wasn’t used, so they applied those funds for Indigenous youth. He says Canada Summer Jobs is a way for the government to help young people in Northern Ontario find work that will hopefully keep them in the area long term.

More often than not, Rota says the people who participate in the program end up being hired full time afterwards. Rota finished by saying the two major benefits of Canada Summer Jobs is giving young people an income so they can pay for school, and the experience of working for companies in the area.
