Federal Government investing $137,500 to support arts and culture in Sudbury

The federal government is providing $137,500 in funding for three local initiatives in Sudbury to help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. FedNorĀ is providing $100,000 for two projects that will help strengthen and grow Sudburyā€™s film and performing arts sectors.

The remaining money is provided through the Department ofĀ Canadian Heritageā€™s Canada 150 Fund and will be used to inform and educate young people on First Nations, MĆ©tis, and Inuit cultures. The three organizations receiving funding as part of this announcement are Theatre Cambrian,Ā Sudbury Downtown Independent Cinema Co-operative, andĀ Laurentian University.

Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre made the announcement yesterday at Theatre Cambrian. Lefebvre says this will help put in place the infrastructure and resources needed to support the continued growth of Greater Sudburyā€™s creative economy. He says it will also promote the cultural diversity of the region. Lefebvre says arts and culture are critical to the social and economic prosperity of Northern Ontario and this funding will help generate new opportunities in these important sectors.
