The West Nipissing “Celebration of Survivors” was a huge success this past Friday at the Sturgeon Falls Arena. The former Relay for Life event honouring residents who have or are battling cancer raises funds for the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. Following a fundraising barbecue outside, close to one hundred Survivors followed the Sturgeon Falls Legion drum and flag team in the Survivors lap. Then, following inspirational words from organizers on behalf of honourary survivor Joanne Sauve, the lights were dimmed and thousands of luminaries arranged around the ice surface boards became visible. That included arrangements spelling out HOPE and ESPOIR. In total, over $15 000.00 was raised at this inaugural event.
