License plate recognition system big help for Sudbury police

Last summer the Sudbury police introduced a license plate recognition system in one of its cruisers and the technology is reaping rewards.  The cruiser patrolled the area along Chelmsford and Azilda looking for drivers who might be suspended or have expired or stolen plates.  The on-board cameras also tell the officer if the vehicle is the subject of an amber alter.  The cruiser flagged 24 vehicles and allowed police to lay 33 charges.  The most charges were for driving with an expired sticker, in this case 15 people.  Another five drivers were under suspension and four had no insurance.  The cruiser has three cameras that capture two licenses plates every second and quickly analyzes the plate number for any wrongdoing.
