Hector Lavigne of Rivet Insurance, gave a presentation at city council this week to clear up how community events get their insurance covered. Mayor Joanne Savage says the city has been adopting community events for years under the assumption that the liability for any event would lie with the municipality.
Lavigne clarified that if the event is organized by a third party they should go ahead and get insurance for the event because they wouldn’t be covered otherwise. Savage says it was interesting information, but if the city is involved with the finances of an event in any way, then they would end up covering the insurance.
Savage says the city will share this information with local groups who organize events to make sure everyone is on the same page.
