Safety board releases recommendations on Gogama CNR derailment

Results from a report on a train derailment near Gogama call for several changes.  The Transportation Safety Board says among them is the need for trains to slow down when hauling dangerous cargo.  In February 2015, 29 oil tankers from Canadian National Railway went off the tracks and the oil in many of those cars burned for several days.  The safety board found that although the train was going below the speed limit, cracks in the rail joints combined with minus 30 degree weather caused the rail bars to fail resulting in the derailment.  The board also found that CN didn’t provide enough training for its track inspectors but the company has since improved that shortcoming.
