Elliot Lake mall collapse trial resumes

The second half of the trial involving the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake is underway.  Engineer Robert Wood was the last person to inspect the mall a few weeks before its roof caved in during June, 2012 killing two women.  Wood was charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death.  His defense team will start laying out its case after the Crown wrapped up its side just before Christmas.  The defense carried out four months of testimony from a long list of witnesses including people in the mall when the top came down and emergency responders.   In its closing statements, the Crown said Wood demonstrated a wanton and reckless disregard for the lives and safety of others.  Wood is the only person charged in connection with the collapse and OPP investigators say unless there’s new evidence, no one else will be charged.
