Police law on names changing in the New Year

Beginning in the New Year, police in Ontario can no longer arbitrarily ask for your name based on race or if you’re in a high-crime area.  The new law applies in cases where an officer is gathering intelligence or is looking into possible criminal or suspicious activity.  However police can still ask your name in other instances.  These include if you’re being arrested or detained, they’re conducting traffic stops, executing a warrant or are investigating a specific crime.
